Trauma focused/informed care is a specific approach to therapy that acknowledges and recognizes understanding how a traumatic experience impacts a person’s mental, behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. It’s tailoring specific interventions and skills in the context of the person’s trauma history, triggers and needs. Trauma informed care is to provide safety & trust in the midst of the therapeutic space and relationship; allowing the client to make choices and decisions on what to work on and what to tread lightly on. It’s to offer skills and strategies in better understanding, coping with, and processing emotions and memories tied to trauma experiences. I have worked with folks who have experienced or witnessed complex trauma, sexual trauma/assault, and intergenerational trauma. Ultimately, we can hope to work towards incorporating these experiences to reclaim one’s identity and life.
